We have made some updates and released AutoUpdate v4.2.
Long time customers will remember that the original versions of AutoUpdate+ forced them to deploy only cumulative updates. The cumulative update had to manage the update workflow for all clients in deployment, no matter how old they were. Recently we moved to a model that allows for incremental, not just cumulative updates. This was done due to a large number of customers whose environment was not suitable for cumulative updates, and who desperately needed a tool that can fully manage incremental updates.
The latest AutoUpdate+ version does not add new functionality, but simply improves the workflow for users who still want to use only cumulative updates. With this version we hope we can satisfy both types of customers, those who want incremental and those who want cumulative updates. If you have any ideas you would like us to implement, why not let us know on the contact form.

You can now download our latest update config tool and client. AutoUpdate v4.1 includes the following changes:
- Configuration tool and client now support multiple versioned updates. This is a big change. The idea is that you can deploy as many updates as you need (i.e. v2.0, v3.0, v4.0, v5.0) and the update client will consume all the updates that it hasn't already seen. For example, if we are currently releasing v5.0 but an application user has not updated since v2.0, then they will be pushed out all of v3.0, v4.0 and v5.0.
- Loading and saving files is now much faster.
- Running /PermissionManagerInstall multiple times will no longer show a warning.
- Running /PermissionManagerCheckInstall will not pop-up a box showing the status.
- Windows temp directory now available as a deployment directory.
- New icons, graphics and help file.
28 December 2007
AutoUpdate v4.0.0.173 is now available. The minor update include the following changes:
- The final screen of the update will now contain a progress bar while updates files are getting switched in. Previous versions simply had a 2-5 second delay, with no feedback that the update client is processing files.
- Error messages that occur during an update will now be displayed as part of the update client screens with a Windows 'warning' icon. Previous versions showed errors as a separate text screen.
- The 'execute' function can now launch the scheduler (previously when executing '
/Scheduler' as the final task caused problems due to multiple instances of the update client). - Cancelled updates will now automatically restart any services that were stopped as part of an update action.

We have just released AutoUpdate v3.9.0.160.
Some of the new features that have been implemented:
- The test sandpit now shows a live feed of the log file. This makes testing significantly easier, as you can see exactly what processes the update client is undertaking in real-time.
- The update client now allows the end-user to decide what to do with cancelled updates.
- Minor changes to update client text (note: Croatian language is also being added, but just missed being included in v3.9)
- Improved capabilities for the configuration tool to manage large files.
29 June 2007
We have just released AutoUpdate v3.8.0.138. Some of the new features:
- Changes to update client GUI. In particular, the update client will now only display one progress bar for the whole update (previously we had one bar for the file progress, and one bar for the total progress).
- Several deployment options: Files, shortcuts, file execution, service management and registry.
- A test sandpit is now integrated into the application. This will significantly help you test the application on your local PC.
- Server file CRC values can now be compared to the local client CRC values. This will help manage the file download process more intelligently, and save you bandwidth.
- Bug fix: File time displayed in the configuration tool will now be displayed under the local time zone.
16 May 2007
AutoUpdate v3.7.4.128 is now available:
- Drag'n'drop is now enabled for various controls. The best feature is that you can now drag files directly from Explorer into the configuration tool.
- The name of registry keys can now be copied directly from RegEdit. This will save you a bit of typing.
- The events list has been increased, and various event names changed
- Forum request: We have added a 'remember credentials' check-box for both proxy and web-site access credentials.
- Many people have written to ask if AutoUpdate+ can manage services. We have finally put in a service management component. This component allows you to Pause, Stop, Start and Continue the execution an application service. Various stages of the update cycle can be used as event triggers for stopping/starting a given service.
29 April 2007
AutoUpdate+ v3.7.2.125 is now available. This update provides two minor enhancements that have been asked for by customers:
- The 'Build and Upload' feature uploads all the update files to your server. A customer noticed that file-based server uploads did not give sufficient feedback when an error occured. Enhanced logging has been added to correct this.
- The update client can recognize an HTTP Basic Authentication request, and displays a credential request box to the user. We have added a feature whereby the update client will automatically supply authentication credentials that have been specified when the client was built.
9 April 2007
AutoUpdate+ has released v3.7.1.121. This is a minor update to v3.7, which contains the following bug fixes:
- Bug Fix: Variable substitution had several faults, and variables were not always inserted into the client correctly. The variable subsitituion algorithm has been corrected.
- Bug Fix: Client graphics were not remembered when the client is updated or a new update client is built. This is now fixed.
- Bug Fix: URL limited to 128 characters. This was a problem when variable replacement is done. A temporary fix is to raise the URL size to 256 characters, which should be sufficient for most users. A future fix will make the URL size dynamic.
- Enhancement: Some minor text and layout changes to the configuration tool.
- Enhancement: Clicking on tray-icon bubble in a CheckBackground update check will now cause the update client to pop-up.
2 April 2007
AutoUpdate+ v3.7 is now available. It contains several new and exciting features:
- New: Scheduler. This component allows your customer to schedule update checks.
- New: Tray icon minimization. Keeps things looking neat.
- New: Tray icon bubble notification of updates (if Background check is used).
- New: File variables now accepts XML files, and can read these from any directory.
- New: General interface improvements to make configuration tool easier to navigate and use
The on-line help and FAQ are good starting points to learn more about new features.

12 Febuary 2007
Version 3.6 of AutoUpdate is now available. This version includes significant changes that you should be aware of:
- Major change: Windows 98 is no longer supported. This should not be a surprise, as Windows 98 is rare to see these days anywhere. However, our decision was made not due to a lack of Win98 distribution, but rather due to the testing difficulties and technical limitations of the platform.
- Major change: UpdateService.exe is no longer a separate application. A new permission manager service is available, and is built right into the update client. It is highly recommended that your deployments have the permission manager service enabled, especially on Vista installations of your application.
- New: Korean language added as a new text to the update client
- Update: Help files have been updated (they were quite out of date)
- Fix: The 'Restart' and 'SilentFinished' tags are now available
2 Febuary 2007
We had created a forum several months ago, and found it to be an excellent way to communicate with customers and get people's queries about AutoUpdate+. Unfortunately various hosting problems occured, servers had to be changed, and along the way the forum was lost!
There is now a reincarnation of the AutoUpdate+ user forums. Post anything you want, and hopefully either ourselves or a customer will be able to deliver a quick response.
26 January 2007

- Fixed: IE7 client connection problems when a proxy was used.
- Fixed: Forward slashes in command-line for file execution erroneously converted to backwards slashes.

Within several days you should see additional content, including a re-opening of the forum and possibly the addition of a blog. (I'm looking forward to it ;-)).

AutoUpdate+ 3.2 has been released, with the following updates:

11 April 2006
We just released AutoUpdate+ 3.1.4.68. As part of our recent web-site refurbishment, we have also refurbished parts of the AutoUpdate+ configuration utility. The interface has been made easier to use in some parts, and the package size was reduced by about 0.5MB by dropping some files that are no longer relevant. Don't forget to contact us if you wish to get some particular feature added to our next release!

We have also updated this web-site -- our previous site was starting to look a bit tacky!
29 January 2006
AutoUpdate+ 3.1.0.62 is now available. This release contains some minor fixes, but it also includes a feature that has been requested by several customers at one time or another. Specifically, customers have wanted an auto-update check to occur before the launching of the main application (whereas previously it was done asynchronously). A check-box has been added to the 'Client' tab which allows you to select the new behavior. If you want new features like this added, then please add comments to the forum. Other modifications made to this version:
- Icons and bitmaps selected for the update client will automatically be set as the defaults for future client executables (this was a forum request).
- For clarity the configuration .aup file, the update client and the server xml file have now been split into separate directories to reduce clutter (this was also a forum request)
- The configuration utility will now warn you if you have modified a language resource but have not saved it before opening a new project.

17 September 2005
Few people realise that auto-update checking allows you to pass to your server many useful parameters. Therefore we have put together an article called crack detection with update checks that shows how we use the 'phone home' capabilities of an update check to run our own detection mechanism for cracks. On other matters, you may not have noticed, but our prices are currently reduced, but only until the end of this month. Take the opportunity to purchase AutoUpdate+ at reduced rates while this offer is still available.

A lot of people are curious about how an automatic update mechanism is programmed, and what is involved in building such a tool. Our team has decided to respond by providing source code for a simple update mechanism which could be useful for single file applications. Take a look at An AutoUpdate Trick.
6 Feb 2005
A user forum has been added to the web-site. The form software we selected is an application called Snitz. It is an ASP-based application, running on a MySQL back-end. Many of our customer queries have been related to very similar topics, and hopefully by use of the forum we can add to the knowledge-base presented to our users. Feel free to post anything on the forums.
